Max Verstappen in the second Red Bull is fourth, so we'll see if the pole sitter can hold off both Ferraris and the reigning world champion. In a bit of a role reversal from Bahrain. where the majority of the field wanted to start on the soft compound due to the performance advantage provided despite not being forced to use the qualifying tyre. this weekend looks to be the opposite. Two and three-stop races were targeted a week ago, but in Jeddah a one-stop is likely to be the preferred option.
That’s because there was graining on the softs when the teams used them on high fuel on Friday, meaning they would lose performance during that phase and only realistically get around 12 laps out of the compound. The medium, on the other hand, did not suffer anywhere nearly as much and can provide a more flexible opening stint of around 20 laps.
The quickest way to the finish is then expected to be by switching to the hard tyres and running to the end of the race, with the hard proving to be a very consistent tyre during the race simulations. The hard is around 0.9s per lap slower than the medium in terms of raw pace, but with a bit of car management required during the race that gap is expected to be smaller in reality, making it a good tyre for the second part of the Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez claimed his first ever Formula One pole at the 215th attempt when the Mexican upstaged Red Bull teammate and world champion Max Verstappen in qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Watch live on Foxtel and Kayo from Monday 2:30AM AEDT, race from 4AM!
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc joins Perez on the front row with Verstappen on the second row after qualifying in fourth behind the other Ferrari of Carlos Sainz.
Schumacher badly damaged his VF-22 car in a massive accident during qualifying for this weekend’s event in Jeddah.
The German escaped without injury though and, following precautionary checks at a nearby hospital on Saturday night, he was discharged and able to return to his hotel.
With Schumacher declared fit, Haas could have elected to prepare a new car for him and get him out to start from the pitlane for the Saudi GP.
But Steiner took the decision not to do that, because he felt that that was too little to gain from the effort. with a bigger potential for downside.
Follow latest updates from the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix as Sergio Perez starts on pole for the first time in his F1 career. The Mexican put together an impeccible lap around the tight streets of Jeddah in Q3 to put himself on the front of the grid, where he will have the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in his mirrors starting second and third.
Perez’s teammate Max Verstappen begins fourth, with Alpine’s Esteban Ocon a very creditable fifth and Mercedes’ George Russell sixth. Lewis Hamilton starts the race 16th after a disastrous qualifying saw him struggle and exit at Q1.
Meanwhile a Saudi GP marshal has been removed after saying on Twitter he hoped seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton suffered an accident similar to Romain Grosjean’s fiery crash in Bahrain in 2020. A spokesman for Formula One’s governing body said the unnamed marshal, writing in Arabic, would play no further part in the race weekend in Jeddah.
